English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

33 1 Woe to thee that spoilest, and thou wast not spoiled; and dealest treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with thee! when thou shalt cease to spoil, thou shalt be spoiled; and when thou shalt make an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with thee. 2 O LORD, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee: be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble. 3 At the noise of the tumult the people fled; at the lifting up of thyself the nations were scattered. 4 And your spoil shall be gathered like the gathering of the caterpiller: as the running to and fro of locusts shall he run upon them. 5 The LORD is exalted; for he dwelleth on high: he hath filled Zion with judgment and righteousness. 6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure. salvation: Heb. salvations 7 Behold, their valiant ones shall cry without: the ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly. valiant...: or, messengers 8 The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceaseth: he hath broken the covenant, he hath despised the cities, he regardeth no man. 9 The earth mourneth and languisheth: Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits. hewn...: or, withered away 10 Now will I rise, saith the LORD; now will I be exalted; now will I lift up myself. 11 Ye shall conceive chaff, ye shall bring forth stubble: your breath, as fire, shall devour you. 12 And the people shall be as the burnings of lime: as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire. 13 Hear, ye that are far off, what I have done; and, ye that are near, acknowledge my might. 14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? 15 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; righteously: Heb. in righteousnesses uprightly: Heb. uprightnesses oppressions: or, deceits blood: Heb. bloods 16 He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure. high: Heb. heights, or, high places 17 Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off. that...: Heb. of far distances 18 Thine heart shall meditate terror. “The LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will deliver us.”

Isaiah ends this chapter by summing up for the believer the favored position of those that trust and rest on the LORD as Savior. He reminds us that God is our judge, our lawgiver, our ruler and our Savior. We cannot separate these and have only part of His office for our life. God by grace is our life and sustainer of life throughout our lives and into eternity.

In our previous reading, we understood that God gives to every true believer perfect peace. The blessing of peace is a result of God’s position in our life.

First He is not only our judge but our righteous judge. Judgments on this earth are often subjective and not dependable. But with God His judgment is totally righteous. David wrote, “Our God is coming, and will not keep silence: a fire will destroy before His face, and it will be very tempestuous round about him. He will call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he alone may judge his people. Gather my saints together to me; who have made a covenant with me by the sacrifice. And the heavens will declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah. (Stop and meditate on this!)” (Psalm 50:3-6Psalm 50:3-6
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

3 Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. 4 He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. 5 Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. 6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.

) The Psalmist says that His righteous judgment is so wonderful that the trusting believer may sing and rejoice over His judgment. “All on the earth should applaud the Lord: break forth, cry out and rejoice to the Lord, singing to the LORD with the harp; with the lyre, and the voice of a song. With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful sound before the LORD, the King. The sea will thunder, and the fullness of; the world, and they that dwell on it. Let the river give applause: let the mountains be overcome with joy before the LORD; for He is coming to judge the whole earth: with righteousness He will judge the world and the people with fairness.” (Psalm 98:4-9Psalm 98:4-9
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. 5 Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. 6 With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King. 7 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. the fulness...: or, all it containeth 8 Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together 9 Before the LORD; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.

Secondly, Isaiah says that the LORD is our “lawgiver”.  God has established His law for our good. Speaking about the Lord Jesus Christ, Moses writes, “The right and power to rule will not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh (peace) comes; and to him shall the gathering of the people be.” (Genesis 49:10Genesis 49:10
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

) He set the physical bounds of all of nature before man was created. “Before He made the earth, the fields, and the highest mountains. When he established the heavens, I was there: when he decreed a circle upon the face of the waters: When he strengthened the clouds above: when he gave strength the eyes of the sea: When he appointed the limits of the sea, that the waters could not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: I was along side of Him, as a skilled craftsman: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before his face: Rejoicing in the inhabitable part of his earth; and my delights were in the sons of men.” (Proverbs 8:26-31Proverbs 8:26-31
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. fields: or, open places the highest...: or, the chief part 27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: a compass: or, a circle 28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: 29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: 30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; 31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

Thirdly, He is our King. “All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Tell the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your King is coming to you, meek, and mounted on an ass, and a colt of an ass.” (Matthew 21:4-5Matthew 21:4-5
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

) “And before him will be gathered all people: and he shall mark them off one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say to them on his right hand, “Come, you who are blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:” (Matthew 25:32-34Matthew 25:32-34
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

) Jesus said to Pilate concerning His kingdom, “Then Pilate entered the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered him, “Are you saying this thing of yourself, or did others tell it you about me?” Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own people and the chief priests have delivered you to me: what have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, so that I would not be delivered to the Jews: but my kingdom is not from here.” (John 18:33-36John 18:33-36
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? 34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? 35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

This One, who is our judge, our lawgiver, and our King, is also our Savior. “But after that the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared to men, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; who he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior; That being justified by His grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:4-7Titus 3:4-7
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, love: or, pity 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; abundantly: Gr. richly 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
